#3663 - 03/10/04 08:49 PM Firewall,cardsharing and image? [Re: ]

Hello,

A few questions:

What image should i use that supports cardsharing?

How many clients can a DreamBox server provide? (for example are 3 clients acceptable? performance etc?)

How do i protect my DreamBox? it is behind a router, but do i have to isntall a firewall? and how does that work?

Last question what is the ip adres of the server?(the one that the clients edit in the list) The routers ip adres or the internal Ip adres?

All these questions are for educational purpose.

Thanx in advance

Hi there,

Some answers:
Almost every image does support cardsharing, but the easiest one is Ronaldd and Pli

You DreamBox can provide to a zillion users but your card will turn red and glowing smile The card (C+ for instance) can be shared to a 15 users (online)

The best way to protect is using the internal firewall, you can let a few ip addresses have access. MAC address won't work.. The best way to protect is to use a Linux server with iptables.

The server ip address is from the outside the ip address you get when you visit http://www.mijnip.nl
Be sure to reroute the right (1500) portnumber to the internal ip address in the router.

Goodluck,

FreeSat

My SMC router works with MAC adres filtering. Why doesnt that work with the DreamBox?

The connecting MAC address is not the user but the proxy or any other server passed by connecting your server. Try a TRACERT ipaddress.... like tracert 212.212.212.212 something like that, before you get to the host you pass many other servers so a direct connection is impossible...

Hi,

I must be stupid but downloaded the cs_040303.zip file and get 2 other files inside but do not know where to put them and which one to choose.

Is there a FAQ i haven't found to help me or can anybody take a few minutes to explain in details where to put these files and how to configure the Addon ?

Many thanks in advance. wink

You can paste the files anywhere you like on your Linux server...
Be sure to edit the config files before starting it...
Just start the file by ./cs_srv in the directory where you pasted them.

thanks FreeSat ,

i did not manage to make it work wink

I've copied the 2 files "cs_srv" and "romu.cfg.sample" to /var/etc

Then i found nothinf to edit on the DreamBox itself, and when editing the files themselves don't know which one to edit and what to put inside.

I don't know how to "start" the file cd_srv too frown

Hum sorry about such an answer and thanks for your help.

I hope we're talking about the same...
You have a Linux server, a DreamBox and a Ronaldd or a Pli image..

Copy your cardsharing server files to your Linux machine and just edit the config files to your preferences like portnumber and com-port, default is Com1.

Startup of the cs on your linux machine goes like:
[change directory to where you copied the files]
./cs_srv

That's it, then on your DreamBox go to your emu setup and choose a emu with _CS behind. Whenever the emu_cs is highlighted press the ok key and enter the ip address of your linux machine and the portnumber ofcourse.

That's all !!!

Well freesat, i am starting to understand why i was so confused: no i do not have any Linux server.

Al i have is:

Windows XP on PC
DreamBox connected to PC and internet
Hydra and Rudream images on stick, 108.2 on flash

Do you think we can do anything with this config ?

Thanks again for your help Freesat.

Good day for all.

Freesat: after testing several images i decided that i like PLI the best. Premiere is easy with SCAM. I still have a concern. My SMC router doesnt support ip filtering (as far as i know) only MAC adres filtering. So when i actrivate the Ronald CS my CS server isnt protected (i have to place the the DreamBox in a DMZ, since i cant filter ip adresses) so anyone can contact my server? or is there an option to limit the clients? or setup password protection? As long as they dont know my ip adres im save i think But.. can they trace my ip adres with certain tools etc? browse for cardservers etc?

Thanx for answering

@Didier74
This config is not capable of setting up a good firewall, there are always ways to get in and maybe it's an option for you to get a pc (PII or something) and install Linux, it's quiet easy...

@Bvp
Maybe for you it's an option to get a new router or just buy external firewall hardware like Cisco has.. Any other way isn't possible probably. Locking MAC addresses out isn't any option because all connection come from the same mac address, your gateway of the server who accesses your pc/router. The client MAC address is never visible because they go to their gateway and they go to the backbone, from backbone to another backbone and at the end it will be at your router....
Sorry.

Hi... this is an old topic and i don't know if my question really fits in here but i'll give it a shot.

I have two houses (both have dreambox500s and a satellite dish, only in one house i pay for the satellite service).

I would like to share my card from my first house to my second house (i am never in both houses at the same time so i usually just take the card with me to whichever house i am going to but sharing would be a lot easier once it's done) through the internet (i know it's not allowed to discuss wan sharing but in this case it is a share only between MY 2 dreamboxes, only i don't have them in MY same house at the same time.).

Well, this could be easy, you might say... However there is a problem. Both houses have internet connection but in the (let's call it "second house") second house i don't have access to the router to forward any ports (neighbour's AUTHORIZED wireless connection). Is there any way that would be possible to set a cardsharing server in the first house (where i CAN forward any needed ports in my router) and a cardsharing client in the second house (without having to open any ports?

Thanks in advance for all the answers that might come (hopefully ;))

Yes, it is still cardsharing... Lan or Wan it is always card sharing and i don't see how sharing in the same house is more legal than sharing between two different houses with the same owner (and actually the same only occupant which is me)... Maybe if i reformulate the question...

In a LAN environment, is it possible to share a card from a dreambox500s to another, knowing that the second one (client, which is in the same network) has a firewall blocking all incoming/unrequested traffic for other security reasons?

I think i have the problem almost solved but i would like to hear some opinions from experts as well.

Thank you

I thought DJ made it clear no talking about wansharing. In the netherlands is inhouse sharing allowed.

A DreamBox has no firewall by default.
